This project began at the Anthropocene Campus Melbourne 2018. The theme of conference was ‘the elemental’.

In 2019, the UN’s year of the Period Table of Elements, the Society for Cultural Anthropology published a forum of “Fieldsites” essays edited by Thao Phan, Courtney Addison and Timothy Neale.

Other dimensions of the project were developed through experiments at the 2020 Society for the Social Studies of Science meeting and the HKW’s ‘The Shape of a Practice’.

University of Toronto Press has published an edited collection that emerges from these different collaborations. The book “tests a range of possible ways to tabulate and narrate the elemental as a way to bring into view fresh discussion on material constitutions and, thereby, new ethical stances, responsibilities, and power relations.”
